"Sorrowful yet always rejoicing" Lament and Christ's gift of being truly human

Many people wittingly and unwittingly associate lament with a lack of faith in God’s sovereign will, or with an undermining of the new life we have in Christ, where rejoicing always may seem to be in contradiction with sorrow, anger and even questioning God. Judson shows that Bonhoeffer regarded lament as a fundamental aspect of Christ’s person and work, a person and work that we are all called to share in. Judson then explores what this might mean in experiences of desolation and hopelessness, which may be a more profound form of faithfulness that we are sometimes taught.
